The Rivian R1S is an impressive technical tour de force, with real long-range driving capability on a single charge and seating for seven. But it also feels like a car that could be improved in many small ways to make it more usable as a family vehicle. For example, the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on-screen functions, slow battery charging, a confusing infotainment system, and poor suspension calibration hurt this EV’s overall score.

The 2024 rivian r1s adventure perf dual-motor large pack is available in Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor form with a variety of drive modes and battery packs. The $79,800 base Dual-Motor version has the 105-kwh Standard pack and can travel 260 miles on a charge. Adding the Large pack boosts range to 321 miles. The $90,800 Performance Dual-Motor edition adds more drive modes. This model can be upgraded to the new 149-kwh Max Pack for 400-mile range.

The Rivian’s dual electric motors produce an amazing 665 horsepower and 829 pound-feet of torque, enough to blast the R1S from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Software programming gives Performance models a Sport mode that unleashes all of the motors’ capabilities, boosting output to 665 hp and allowing it to run the 0-60 time down to 2.5 seconds. The two-wheel-drive R1S is a blast to drive on paved roads, and the torque vectoring system that constantly adjusts how much power goes to each wheel makes it feel more precise than a conventional SUV. However, the 22-inch wheels on our tested Dual-Motor model detract from ride comfort, since they leave less tire sidewall rubber to cushion impacts.
